    Blind assessment for stereo images considering binocular characteristics and deep perception map based on deep belief network

    © 2018 Elsevier Inc. In recent years, blind image quality assessment in the field of 2D image/video has gained the popularity, but its applications in 3D image/video are to be generalized. In this paper, we propose an effective blind metric evaluating stereo images via deep belief network (DBN). This method is based on wavelet transform with both 2D features from monocular images respectively as image content description and 3D features from a novel depth perception map (DPM) as depth perception description. In particular, the DPM is introduced to quantify longitudinal depth information to align with human stereo visual perception. More specifically, the 2D features are local histogram of oriented gradient (HoG) features from high frequency wavelet coefficients and global statistical features including magnitude, variance and entropy. Meanwhile, the global statistical features from the DPM are characterized as 3D features. Subsequently, considering binocular characteristics, an effective binocular weight model based on multiscale energy estimation of the left and right images is adopted to obtain the content quality. In the training and testing stages, three DBN models for the three types features separately are used to get the final score. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed stereo image quality evaluation model has high superiority over existing methods and achieve higher consistency with subjective quality assessments

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi luasnya tingkat pengungkapan tanggung jawab sosial Perusahaan (Corporate Social Responsibility) dengan menguji pengaruh ukuran Perusahaan, profitabilitas, leverage, kepemilikan insti­tusional, ukuran dewan komisaris, ukuran dewan direksi, dan ukuran komite audit. Sampel yang digunakan adalah Perusahaan sektor pertambangan terdaftar di Bursa Efek Indonesia selama 2010-2012. Data diperoleh dari laporan keuangan auditan dan laporan tahunan serta laporan keberlanjutan (sustainability report) jika ada. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan analisis regresi linear berganda. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ukuran Perusahaan dan komite audit memiliki pengaruh positif terhadap peng­ungkapan tanggung jawab sosial.     Enantioselective Cross-Coupling of <i>meso</i>-Epoxides with Aryl Halides

    The first enantioselective cross-electrophile coupling of aryl bromides with <i>meso</i>-epoxides to form <i>trans</i>-β-arylcycloalkanols is presented. The reaction is catalyzed by a combination of (bpy)­NiCl<sub>2</sub> and a chiral titanocene under reducing conditions. Yields range from 57 to 99% with 78–95% enantiomeric excess. The 30 examples include a variety of functional groups (ether, ester, ketone, nitrile, ketal, trifluoromethyl, sulfonamide, sulfonate ester), both aryl and vinyl halides, and five- to seven-membered rings. The intermediacy of a carbon radical is strongly suggested by the conversion of cyclooctene monoxide to an aryl [3.3.0]­bicyclooctanol

    Nickel-Catalyzed Regiodivergent Opening of Epoxides with Aryl Halides: Co-Catalysis Controls Regioselectivity

    Epoxides are versatile intermediates in organic synthesis, but have rarely been employed in cross-coupling reactions. We report that bipyridine-ligated nickel can mediate the addition of functionalized aryl halides, a vinyl halide, and a vinyl triflate to epoxides under reducing conditions. For terminal epoxides, the regioselectivity of the reaction depends upon the cocatalyst employed. Iodide cocatalysis results in opening at the less hindered position via an iodohydrin intermediate. Titanocene cocatalysis results in opening at the more hindered position, presumably via Ti<sup>III</sup>-mediated radical generation. 1,2-Disubstituted epoxides are opened under both conditions to form predominantly the trans product

    A Prechop Technique Using a Reverse Chopper

    <p><i>Purpose</i>: To describe a manual prechop technique for splitting the nucleus of the lens using a recently developed reverse chopper. <i>Methods</i>: During the process, the reverse chopper and the Nagahara chopper are placed diagonally in the peripheral area of the nucleus of the lens after capsulorhexis. The reverse chopper and the Nagahara chopper then are pushed horizontally toward each other so they meet at the center of the lens to split the nucleus of lens into 2 parts. <i>Results</i>: In all cases, the reverse chopper was effective during the prechop procedure for hard nuclei, the nucleus of the lens remained <i>in situ</i> during the chopping process, and the reverse chopper did not retract the suspensory ligament in patients in whom the ligament was fragile. During the prechop procedure, no capsule breakage occurred, and the time and energy required for effective phacoemulsification were reduced significantly. <i>Conclusions</i>: The prechop technique using the reverse chopper can be applied for cases with grade III–V nuclei, overripe nuclei, and fragile suspensory ligaments. The procedure is simple, and the learning curve is not steep.</p

    Fucoidan Induces Cancer Cell Apoptosis by Modulating the Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Cascades

    <div><p>Background</p><p>Cancer metastasis is the main cause leading to disease recurrence and high mortality in cancer patients. Therefore, inhibiting metastasis process or killing metastatic cancer cells by inducing apoptosis is of clinical importance in improving cancer patient survival. Previous studies revealed that fucoidan, a fucose-rich polysaccharide isolated from marine brown alga, is a promising natural product with significant anti-cancer activity. However, little is known about the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in fucoidan-induced cell apoptosis.</p><p>Principal Findings</p><p>We reported that fucoidan treatment inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Fucoidan treatments resulted in down-regulation of the glucose regulated protein 78 (GRP78) in the metastatic MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, and of the ER protein 29 (ERp29) in the metastatic HCT116 colon cancer cells. However, fucoidan treatment promoted ER Ca<sup>2+</sup>-dependent calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) phosphorylation, Bcl-associated X protein (Bax) and caspase 12 expression in MDA-MB-231 cells, but not in HCT116 cells. In both types of cancer cells, fucoidan activated the phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha (p-eIF2α)\CCAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous protein (CHOP) pro-apoptotic cascade and inhibited the phosphorylation of inositol-requiring kinase 1 (p-IRE-1)\X-box binding proteins 1 splicing (XBP-1s) pro-survival cascade. Furthermore, CHOP knockdown prevented DNA damage and cell death induced by fucoidan.</p><p>Conclusion/Significance</p><p>Fucoidan exerts its anti-tumor function by modulating ER stress cascades. Contribution of ER stress to the fucoidan-induced cell apoptosis augments our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying its anti-tumour activity and provides evidence for the therapeutic application of fucoidan in cancer.</p></div

    Narrowing the age-based digital divide: Developing digital capability through social activities

    Healthcare information technologies (HIT) have shown great potential for improving the effectiveness and quality of healthcare services. However, the inequal ability of older adults to use HIT may limit their exploitation of these benefits. To narrow the age-based “digital divide”, this research further develops the concept of digital capability and emphasises the link between older adults and their social context. Based on a qualitative inductive study of 33 participants, who included Chinese patients and their family members, we generate a novel theoretical model for understanding the process by which social activities may shape older adults' digital capabilities. Based on the model, we suggest two strategies that might encourage older adults to engage with HIT. This research contributes to the information systems (IS) literature by strengthening digital capability as a conceptual lens to investigate individuals' engagement with information communication technologies (ICTs). It also extends research on the social context for ICT use by revealing how social processes at multiple levels influence digital capability development. Finally, this study offers practical implications for governments and private sectors to encourage and promote ICT use by older adults
